How to Flash your RX231 / RX65N Board

When would I need to flash my board?

  • If you want to update your board with the newest firmware
  • If you want to change your firmware to a different kit

 

There are two ways to flash the boards:

  • Using an E1 Programmer (Available for RX231 and RX65N)
  • Using two jumper cables if you don’t have the E1 programmer (Only for RX231)

 

 

Flashing with an E1 Programmer (RX231 or RX65N):

  1. Download the hex file for your kit – this can be obtained on your kit’s Quick Start Guide
  2. Connect the E1 Programmer to your board (See image below) and connect the E1 Programmer’s USB to your computer.

  3. Connect the board to your computer using the USB cable provided in the kit.
  4. Press and release the reset button
  5. Load the Renesas Flash Programmer. Download (Windows only)
  6. Click File > Create a new project, and select the following:
    • Microcontroller:
      • Select ‘RX200’ if you are flashing a RX231 Board
      • Select ‘RX65x’ if you are flashing a RX65N Board
    • Project Name (this field is arbitrary)
    • Communication Tool: E1
    • Interface: FINE

  7. Click ‘Connect’. You may see a popup to set ID Code — click OK. If successful, you should see the message below:

  8. Under Program File, select the hex file that you downloaded earlier.
  9. Click ‘Start’ and wait for the board to be flashed.
    For RX231: If successful, you will see a green OK next to the Start button.
    For RX65N: you may see a red ‘NG’ and an Error message “A protection error occurred in the device”. This is expected.

  10. Remove the E1 Programmer and press reset on the board.
  11. (For only RX231) Windows Explorer should now open a window of the newly recognized USB drive with the factory demo configuration file. To apply the configuration of your previous project, overwrite the factory demo configuration file with the kit configuration file that was provided in email upon kit activation — See your kit’s Quick Start Guide.

Your board is now ready!

 

Flashing with two jumper cables (Only for RX231):

  1. Save the configuration file that came with the board.
  2. Download the hex file for your kit – this can be obtained on your kit’s Quick Start Guide
  3. Using two jumper cables, connect pin 2 (GND) to pin 7 (MD) and pin 10 (UB#) to pin 12 (GND) (see image below).

  4. Connect the board to your computer using the USB cable provided in the kit.
  5. Press and release the reset button – the heartbeat LED should be solid red and not be blinking.
  6. Load the Renesas Flash Programmer. Download (Windows only)
  7. Click File > Create a new project, and select the following:
    • Microcontroller:
      • Select ‘RX200’
    • Project Name (this field is arbitrary)
    • Communication Tool: USB Direct

  8. Click ‘Connect’. If successful, you should see the ‘Operation completed’ message.
  9. Under Program File, select the hex file that you downloaded earlier.
  10. Click ‘Start’ and wait for the board to be flashed. If successful, you will see a green OK next to the Start button.

  11. Remove the jumper cables and press reset on the board. Windows Explorer should now open a window of the newly recognized USB drive with the factory demo configuration file.
  12. To apply the configuration of your previous project, overwrite the factory demo configuration file with the kit configuration file that was provided in email upon kit activation — See your kit’s Quick Start Guide.

 

Your board is now ready!
